Painted Glass

Painting on Glass

  • Vitreous Paints and Enamels

For centuries artists have painted on glass. These “paints” have consisted of finely ground glass powders which are fired into the glass at the temperature where the glass surface becomes soft and the paint becomes part of the glass.

  • Stains

The term “Stained Glass” is derived from the discovery in the fourteenth century, that firing a silver compound onto the glass would stain it anything from a pale lemon to a deep orange colour.

  • Glassware Paint

Paints used for decorating glassware are a relatively new technique. Unlike the enamels and stains, these paints are baked on at much lower temperatures. While not "permanent", these paints have a very high durability and are advertised as "non-toxic and dishwasher safe".
