Fused Glass

Wanting to explore other aspects of glass art, Kathy began to delve into fusing and slumping several years ago. Now she's gotten me hooked on it too.

From Fused Glass bowls and platters to masks to vases to pate de varre, Fused Glass opens up whole new ways of expressing ourselves in glass.

Glass Fusing Process

The process is quite a bit different from Stained Glass. You still cut out the pieces from a pattern but instead of wrapping them in lead or copper foil and soldering them, they are placed in a kiln and fused together at 1475 degrees.

But you can't just throw any glass you want into the kiln and expect it to fuse successfully. Glass expands when heated and contracts when cooled, but not all glass expands and contracts at the same rate. This rate is called the coefficient of expansion, and all glass that you fuse together must have the same coefficient. Otherwise, the piece will break.

There are other factors which need to be considered, such as how rapidly the glass is heated and cooled, when working in Fused Glass. But basically the proces is, I think, simpler and freer than Stained Glass.

Find out more.

Fused & Slumped Glass Bowls

After a piece has been Fused it usually goes back into the kiln to be Slumped. Often it is Slumped into a platter, bowl or dish form.

Stained Glass Masks

To make a mask we first sculpt a face from potter's clay. Then, using plaster, we make the mold. We'll slump our fused glass into this mold at around 1250 degrees. These masks can be displayed in a window, on a wall or in a stand (see Vacation Mind Mask below).
